The holiday spirit was high this weekend at the Modesto Spirit of Giving 5K Run/Walk. The run raises funds for the City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department’s Leisure Bucks program which offers financial assistance to low-income children, seniors and individuals with disabilities, giving them access to recreational activities city-wide. Since 2007, the recent economic crisis has stripped funding for this program. The Leisure Bucks program is now privately supported, relying solely on the contributions of citizens and fundraising events such as the Modesto Spirit of Giving.
Additionally, every year the Modesto Spirit of Giving partners with a non-profit in the city of Modesto to raise money for a great cause. This year, Modesto Gospel Mission will benefit from a portion of the run/walk proceeds, as well as the canned food drive. The run was held Saturday, December 10th, 2016. The start and finish line was located in the Tenth Stree Plaza. In addition to the 5K run/walk there was a Free Kid's run where children 10 and under chased the Grinch out of Modesto. This year had a record turn out for volunteers, including a few PTK members, helping out the event.

The Modesto community and members from many organizations, including PTK members, came together to revitalize Fairview Park with new equipment and cleanup. The project benefited a park that has experienced some neglect over the years and will serve as a great play area for the children of this predominately low-income family area.
Saturday October 29th was a wonderful day of celebration for the Hispanic community in Modesto. 10th street was filled with booths, altars, and delicious baked goods in honor of the holiday/day of honor Day of the Dead . It was a great opportunity for PTK members to volunteer and learn more about the community.
Fall 2016 Club Rush was a huge success!! Club rush took place this year on September 14th on East Campus and September 15th on West Campus. This year Club Rush coordinated nicely with FLOW (Free Lunch on Wednesdays) with ASMJC to help participating clubs attract more people. Both days our booth generated a lot of interest and over 50 prospective members signed up for our newsletter and even more took home an info packet and new member application. All our officers eagerly participated and helped answer questions for prospective members.
It was a wonderful day at the 2016 Annual Walk to End Alzheimer's in Modesto. The event took place on September 10th at Graceada Park in Modesto Ca. 26 walking teams and 646 participants raised a total of $92,005.20, surpassing their original goal of $87,000.00. The event is held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide. The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
PTK members helped out this year with early morning set up, signing participants up for a group congressional letter, and passing around information and team signs. It was a great opportunity for members to help out and learn more about a great cause and the effect that Alzheimer's has on families and the community. |
